During the summer of 2021, old school Las Cruces skater Arturo “Beaker” Uribe reached out to EPSA about the prospect of upgrading the modular ramp skatepark in Mesquite, New Mexico. He had $120,000 to spend – grant money initially acquired to replace a dilapidated metal mini ramp – light bulb turned on!
Instead of buying another ramp, EPSA suggested doing a concrete overlay. Potential was there to leverage that $120k into a concrete mini ramp with a square bowl end, catch corner bowl and a pumper. It would be done DIY-plus style with a regular concrete company doing the build with expertise guidance provided by EPSA. Following an on-site meeting with Dona Ana County Assessor Andy Segovia and local skaters on July 6, 2021, the more exiting path forward was chosen.
EPSA drafted the concrete construction drawings on graph paper. The key was hooking up with Fulcrum Contracting’s Ron Johnson who got his buddy Carlos Navarette from Nava Tech Inc. to translate the graph paper vision into official AutoCAD construction plans acceptable by the County.
Fulcrum, a preferred vendor with Dona Ana, would get hired as the project’s general contractor who then hired Ray Medina’s concrete company RayCo to do the build. Construction started in January 2023 and wrapped up a few months later with Las Cruces skaters Reed and “Sauce” helping mortar down Penrose coping blocks on the square bowl extension.
